> **When.** *Came into force on July 18th, 2024, with first measures applicable by mid-2026 and first product-specific delegated acts applicable in 2027/2028.*

## Overview

The regulation’s goal is to replace end extend the scope of the 2009 Ecodesign Directive. It sets requirements for companies **to implement sustainability and circularity concerns into the design of their products** while empowering customers and consumers with better information and protection from unfair practices such as planned obsolescence.

## How will the regulation work?

Any company selling products in the EU, regardless of location, must comply with the ESPR. This includes manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and sellers. This mandate encompasses a diverse array of products, spanning beyond consumer goods to encompass sectors such as transport, digital technologies, or textile, to name only a few.

ESPR is a “framework” law. Entry into force will be gradual through **specific Delegated Acts** that will determine the concrete requirements of the law for the targeted sectors, with an estimated creation of 30 new delegated acts by 2030.

The preliminary list of identified products for the first working plan includes textiles, furniture, mattresses, tires, detergents, paints and lubricants.

## Main expectations

Potential impacts include:

- Changes to product design and materials: products may need to be redesigned for enhanced durability and recyclability.
- New labeling requirements: labels may need to provide information about the product's environmental impact.
- Changes to production and manufacturing processes: companies may need to adopt new practices to reduce their environmental footprint.

Performance criteria may include **durability, reliability, reusability, upgradability, repairability, maintenance, and refurbishment**, as well as considerations regarding substances of concern, energy efficiency, resource efficiency, recycled content, remanufacturing and recycling potential, material recovery, environmental impacts including carbon footprint, and expected waste generation.

> A key feature of ESPR is the [**Digital Product Passport**](https://atlas.tilkal.com/eu-digital-product-passport/), which will provide detailed information about a product’s lifespan, reparability, energy efficiency, and recyclability, empowering both consumers and producers to make more sustainable choices.

By early April 2026, the CEN/CENELEC (European Committee for Standardization) dedicated working group (JTC-24) will release **8 technical standards for DPP solution providers**, in accordance with the standardisation request of 31 July 2024: Unique Identifier, Data Carrier, Access Rights Management, Interoperability, Data Processing, Data Storage, Authentication, and API Interface.
