## How does the regulation work?

The Regulation replaces the former Batteries Directive and introduces a **full lifecycle approach**. Companies must meet requirements covering sourcing of raw materials, production, use, and end-of-life, supported by **digital traceability tools**, notably the [**EU Battery Passport**](https://atlas.tilkal.com/eu-digital-product-passport-dpp/) for certain battery categories.

## Main expectations

- **Supply chain due diligence** for critical raw materials (e.g. cobalt, lithium, nickel, natural graphite)
- **Traceability of materials and components**, including origin and sustainability information
- **Battery Passport** requirements (from 2027) providing digital access to standardized battery data
- **Carbon footprint declarations and performance thresholds**
- **Clear allocation of responsibility** across the value chain
- **Data collection and reporting** throughout the battery lifecycle

These obligations significantly increase data and transparency requirements across global battery supply chains.

## Phased Application Timeline of the EU Battery Regulation

- **18 February 2025 — Carbon footprint declarations for EV batteries**Electric vehicle batteries <2kWh must include official carbon footprint information.
- **18 February 2026 — Carbon footprint for large industrial batteries**Carbon footprint declarations extend to industrial batteries with capacity >2 kWh.
- **18 February 2027 — Digital Battery Passport & additional requirements** **Battery Passport mandatory** for EV, LMT and industrial batteries >2 kWh; data must be accessible via a QR code.**Removability/replaceability** requirements for portable and LMT batteries. These build deep traceability and product-level transparency across the supply chain.
- **18 August 2027 — Supply chain due diligence obligations apply**Due diligence on raw material sourcing — including environmental and social risk management — now takes effect for economic operators (especially those with significant turnover). This requirement was postponed from 2025 to 2027 to give industry more preparation time.
- **18 August 2028 and beyond — Recycled content & longer‑term rules**Recycled material content targets for critical materials like cobalt, lithium and nickel are set for implementation starting around 2031 and 2036.Additional performance and durability requirements continue to roll out in later years.

## What’s at risk for your company?

- **Market access restrictions** for non-compliant batteries
- **Financial penalties** set at Member State level
- **Product withdrawals or recalls**
- **Reputational and commercial risks**, particularly for companies with complex or opaque raw material sourcing.

### **Zoom on the Battery Passport**

> The **Battery Passport**, mandatory from **18 February 2027**, is a key element of the EU Battery Regulation designed to ensure full **traceability and sustainability** of batteries on the EU market. It applies to **electric vehicle, industrial, and light means of transport batteries** above 2 kWh.

> Each covered battery must have a **digital record** linking it to its **raw materials, manufacturing process, performance data, and sustainability indicators**, accessible via **QR code or digital interface**. The Passport allows manufacturers, importers, recyclers, and regulators to **verify compliance, monitor environmental and social impacts, and track end-of-life management**, making it a cornerstone of responsible supply chain management in the EU battery sector.
