*Ottawa, June 12, 2026* — The Canadian government has introduced **An Act respecting the prohibition of the importation of goods produced by forced labour**, aiming to reinforce its existing framework to block goods made with forced labour from entering the market. Announced by **Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand**, the proposed law seeks to enhance enforcement, transparency, and coordination among federal agencies.

**Key measures** include:

- A **standalone legislative framework** replacing the current ban under the *Customs Tariff*.
- Authority for the Minister of Foreign Affairs to **list high-risk goods** (by region, entity, or individual) suspected of being produced with forced labour.
- **Mandatory supply chain tracing** for importers of high-risk goods, with penalties for non-compliance.
- **Cost-recovery mechanisms** for violators and improved **information-sharing** among federal partners.

The legislation aligns with Canada’s commitment to **human rights, fair trade, and global efforts** to eradicate forced labour, building on the 2020 import ban and the 2024 *Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act*. It also supports Canadian businesses by leveling the playing field against unethical competitors.

*Minister Anand stated*: *“Canada will not tolerate goods produced through forced labour in our markets. This legislation strengthens our commitment to human rights and fair trade.”*
